commonplace

The project is founded on the idea of a mutual influence between people and their building, based on the principles of making inhabitants more open and happy and the building more personalized and functional.
The project tackles three challenges in society. The first one is the aging population. The second is the reduction of energy consumption per square meter, while increasing the amount of the square meters per person. Last but not least, the challenge quoted by Zygmunt Bauman “in the end of independence there is emptiness of life. Independence should be replaced with very pleasurable interdependency”.

All of those challenges have inspired solutions. Firstly, the apartments, easily turn into shared nurseries and available by an inclusive stairs, are convenient for young as well as elderly habitants. Month, years and decades of domestic life have been shown in the drawing “Notion of time”.

Secondly, to design smaller apartments with the same quality, the house association and the units need to host some of the secondary functions. Many common spaces have been designed, including a laundry room. They are linked to universal activities and rituals for different generations and cultures, like washing, eating and crafting.
All those moments and their areas are designed to subconsciously encourage a person to engage with the community. The building hosts group of individuals living together, in the precious interdependency of a contemporary community.
The last important aspect of the design is the flexibility of the spaces, allowing the user to personalize their home and makes it convenient through life.

Paper model of the facade shows a group of individuals living in the same building—an embodiment of community. As people influence the building, the building mirrors their presence and character to the outside.
